        A brief look at Latin American NRENs: RNP, RedCLARA, and AmLight

      Session Abstract:

        RNP (Brazilian NREN) is upgrading its network towards a scalable

        multi-100G backbone due to many new international collaborations

      and internal user demands. The city of Fortaleza, in the

        northeast region, is becoming a hub for new submarine cables

        connecting South America to Europe, the U.S., and Africa.

        Projects such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and

        collaborations with CLARA (Latin American REN), GÉANT, and

        AmLight are pushing RNP's network to a whole new level. Not just

        a multi-100G backbone is the goal, but also more automation and

        network programmability are some of the transformations taking

        place at RNP.

       

        CLARA's network, or RedClara, through its Bella-S (submarine

        network) and Bella-T (terrestrial network) projects, is

        modifying the connectivity scenario of RENs in Latin America

        with the use of spectrum, dark fiber, and multiple 100G links.

        Besides, crucial new business strategies and models for

        partnership and sustainability are being developed to guarantee

        a long-term and low-cost infrastructure to connect Latin America

        to other foreign partners.

       

        The AmLight-ExP project, an international collaboration

        involving RENs in Latin America, AURA (Association of

    Universities for Research in Astronomy), NSF (National Science

        Foundation), and FIU (Florida International University) is

        enhancing Latin American connectivity to a new level, mixing

        together leased 100G links, optical spectrum, and SDN

        orchestration. With high demand science drivers, such as LSST

        and LHC, AmLight SDN network is continuously being enhanced to

        address new network requirements, telemetry, and user-centric

        features.

       

        In this session, RNP, RedClara, and AmLight will present a brief

        look at what is happening in Latin America. The Latin American

        network network evolution, development challenges and creative

        solutions to address these challenges will be shared with the

        audience.
